Besides, the correspondent also found another 14km tailback at various places stretching from Joydebpur intersection to Rajendrapur intersection on both sides of the same highway .

Commuters and drivers told The Daily Star that the traffic congestion is mostly in Konabari, Safipur Palli Bidyut interception area on the highway.

It was taking more than two hours to cross every kilometre, they said.

Apart from this, there is also traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Tangail highway from Chandana intersection to Chandra intersection of Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila.

While talking to this correspondent on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Jasim Uddin, a driver of Imam Transport Limited, said the number of passengers and vehicles is increasing since this morning. This pressure will continue till the day before Eid.

Ahsanul Haque, assistant commissioner (North Traffic) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said a total of 323 traffic members in the Gazipur metropolitan area are working together to keep the traffic on the highways normal.

The vehicle pressure on the highways has increased from this morning, he said.

People are waiting for vehicles to reach their destination at various stands on the highways occupying a portion of the road, which is causing low speed of vehicles and creating traffic jams, he added.

Apart from this, two lanes on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for some distances remained closed as work on the BRT project from Tongi Bridge to Chandana intersection is in progress, which also is another reason for the tailback, said traffic policemen and transport workers.

Besides, there is also huge pressure of home-bound people for the Eid celebration at the railway station in Gazipur, added the correspondent.
